Over several hundred years a small community grew up around Grefsheim, with more than 30 crofts, shore crofts and workers' cottages. Families lived here for generations. Some worked on the main farm, others were craftsmen, fishermen or followed other trades.
In 1865, 207 people lived at Grefsheim and on its crofts, in 33 households.
Several of the old crofts survive. Others are gone, but there are photographs, maps and information about the people who lived there.
The history of Grefsheim is also the history of all the people who lived and worked here. We are trying to recover their names, the houses they lived in and the stories they left behind.
Crofts that still stand, photographed as they look now, beside the oldest picture we have.

In 1865, 207 people lived at Grefsheim and its crofts, on 24 crofts in 33 households. Just 35 years later the number had more than halved. Many emigrated to America, others found work elsewhere in Norway.
When the families left for America →The information about the crofts, the families and the farm community draws largely on Gunhild Kolstad's extensive work in Nes bygdebok - Bruks- og slektshistorie, Østfjerdingen, vol. 2, part 2 (1995), especially pages 345-426.
Kolstad's survey of residents, crofts and farming is a central source for the history told here. It is supplemented by historical photographs, censuses and other source material.
