Tennis, swimming and Adam Smith

1920

In the summer of 1920 the 21-year-old Austrian Friedrich Hayek came to Grefsheim. He had been ill with malaria and was to recover his strength.

He arrived on 27 July and stayed until 13 September, almost seven weeks.

His diary tells of tennis, swimming, riding and boat trips on Mjøsa. He read Adam Smith, learned Norwegian and worked on a manuscript that later became a forerunner of his book The Sensory Order.

He later became a professor of economics, and in 1974 he received the Nobel Prize in Economics.

But he spent his summer at Grefsheim as a young student, with books, swimming and boat trips.
