The cow that interrupted the peace talks

1993

In July 1993 Johan and Anne Lise Mellbye hosted secret peace negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians at Grefsheim.

The talks took place under heavy guard. For the first few days six security men in suits walked around the farmyard. It looked so conspicuous that the hosts sent them to Brumunddal to buy casual clothes. After that they were given garden tools.

One day a cow got out of its enclosure.

The Palestinian chief negotiator Abu Ala spotted the cow from the drawing room and wanted to go out and help. The security guards would not let him. The policeman sent to bring the cow back did not have an easy job either.

Johan later remarked that stopping cows was hardly part of police training.
