The farm owner who wanted to stop emigration

1908

In the second half of the 1800s many families left the crofts under Grefsheim. Some went as far as America. When Johan Egeberg Mellbye took over the farm in 1889, the population had already fallen sharply.

Mellbye later became involved in the work against emigration from Norway.

In 1908 he became the first leader of the society later known as Ny Jord. It aimed to create more opportunities to make a living from farming in Norway, through new cultivation and the founding of new farms.

The following year Mellbye co-wrote the pamphlet Mot emigrationen.
