The jewellery that lay in the ground at Grefsheim

The Viking Age

Long before Grefsheim got its present name, beautiful jewellery was worn here.

In the 1800s a pair of oval bronze brooches was found in the soil of the farm, then spelt Grefseng. Such brooches were usually worn with women's dress in the Viking Age, one on each side of the chest to hold up the gown.

The Museum of Cultural History has also registered jewellery finds from the Merovingian period, several centuries before the Viking Age.

Who wore the jewellery, and how it ended up in the ground at Grefsheim, we do not know. But the brooches are preserved in the museum collections.
