The man who took Grefsheim from the bishop

1537

As Jomfru Karine Alvsdatter lay dying at Grefsheim, Bishop Mogens of Hamar received a deed of gift transferring the farm and its estates to the Church.

But the bishop kept Grefsheim for only a few months.

In the summer of 1537 the Danish nobleman Truid Ulfstand came to Hamar with the king's forces. He was to carry out the Reformation and secure King Christian III's power in Norway.

Truid was married to Gørvel Fadersdotter, who was Jomfru Karine's heir and laid claim to Grefsheim.

On 18 June the bishop had to surrender the farm to Truid. Shortly afterwards he also gave up the bishop's residence in Hamar and was taken prisoner to Denmark.

So the man who took Grefsheim from the bishop was married to the woman who claimed the inheritance.
