The nursery that began with apple trees

1920-1936

In the autumn of 1920 Johan Egeberg Mellbye received a consignment of apple rootstocks from Holstein in Germany. He wanted to plant an orchard at Grefsheim.

But there were more trees than the farm itself needed. The surplus was the start of Grefsheim Planteskole, the nursery.

The first nursery catalogue appeared in 1923. The following year the nursery began growing roses, and by 1936 it offered 66 rose varieties.

What began with a few spare apple trees became Grefsheim Planteskole, with customers across much of the country.
