The shrub that was not cleared away

1949

In 1949 nursery manager O. Imsgard was clearing an old nursery bed at Grefsheim. While working he found a spiraea that he decided to keep.

The shrub, which had probably arisen as a seedling, was later named «Grefsheim». It became known for its long, arching branches, covered in spring with small white flowers.

The variety became popular both in Norway and abroad. In Sweden it is called norskspirea, and in English-speaking countries it is known as «Grefsheim Spirea».

In 1993 it received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
