The tractor that sank 79 metres

1979-1980

In winters when the ice was safe, Grefsheim kept an ice road across Mjøsa between Nes and Hamar. Across the ice it was three kilometres, against thirty around the lake.

Johan Edvard Mellbye at Grefsheim was responsible for measuring the ice and clearing the road.

Once he was out on the tractor when it suddenly felt as if he were driving uphill. But the ice was flat.

Johan realised what was about to happen and threw himself off the tractor. Moments later the ice broke. The tractor disappeared and came to rest 79 metres down.

Luckily he had a man with him on a kicksled with a rescue line.

Johan got ashore, but his beaver-nylon boiler suit was frozen so stiff that it had to be broken off him when he got home.

A hot bath did him good.
