1865-1900
In 1865, 207 people lived at Grefsheim and the crofts under the farm. They made up 33 households on 24 registered crofts.
Here lived crofters and their families, servants and others who worked on and around the farm. Children grew up on the crofts, and families lived off the land and the work they were given.
Just 35 years later the population had fallen to 95.
Many had left for America or moved to find work elsewhere. At the same time farming was changing. New machines and methods gradually reduced the need for labour.
