When a mother challenged the Church

1487-1488

Magnhild Oddsdatter lived at Grefsheim at the end of the 1400s. The family owned farms across much of the country.

One of her sons, Karl Sigurdsson, was Bishop of Hamar. When he died in 1487, a will came to light leaving large estates to the Church.

Magnhild protested. The will had been sealed after her son's death, so she held that it was not valid.

Together with another son, Odd Alvsson, she took up the fight against the priests of Hamar Cathedral.

The dispute seems to have ended with the family keeping the estates.
