When outer space landed at Grefsheim

1976

On 1 February 1976 Johan Mellbye and his wife Anne Lise, who owned Grefsheim, were out on the ice of Mjøsa. They wanted to check whether it was thick enough to drive on.

Then they noticed some small black stones lying on the frost.

Where had they come from?

The answer was space.

The stones had probably fallen a few days earlier. Altogether eight to ten pieces were found, weighing just 45.5 grams.

The meteorite was officially named Grefsheim and given to the Natural History Museum in Oslo.

Quite a long journey for a few small stones on the ice of Mjøsa.

The Grefsheim meteorite. The black fusion crust formed as the stone fell through the atmosphere.
