When the bishop's men took gold and silver

1537

When Jomfru Karine Alvsdatter died at Grefsheim at the turn of 1536-1537, she left large estates, money, silver and valuable documents. Several people believed they had a right to the inheritance.

While Karine still lay on her bier, her kinsman Iver Jenssøn came from Hovinsholm to secure her possessions. But the bishop's men came too.

According to a historical account, they took gold, silver, money and important deeds by force.

Some of the documents were never recovered. The following year four men stated that they had seen an important letter about the inheritance. But none of them could remember which estates it covered.

That hardly made the settlement any easier.
